There is good news for those of you who love to gossip. New research in England shows that gossiping may be beneficial, at least for those who gossip.
Researchers from Staffordshire University, UK, said people who are gossiping feel more supported. And gossip is positive (praise of others) can increase the "self esteem" (self-esteem) gossipmonger. The discovery was presented at the British Psychological Society conference.
In the study, Jennifer Cole and Hannah Scrivener see the answers from 160 participants who filled out questionnaires that asked about the tendency to gossip, "self esteem" them, social support and life satisfaction.
Gossip a higher level associated with a greater sense of support but not connected with the "self esteem" or life satisfaction.
Then, the researchers asked 140 people to talk negatively or positively from those who are not real. Those who speak in a positive sense "self esteem" that is greater than those who speak negatively.
"Gossip is usually seen as a bad thing. Our findings show some form of gossip, especially the kind where people praise of others, can be connected with some of the beneficial effect irrespective of the fact that the gossiper gossiper usually not trusted," said Cole in a "news release" British Psychological Society, as quoted Health 24.
